I am working at howies this week.
Jon and Alex are putting me up in Bwthyn Barri. Heating has been a bit sparse to say the least.
Slept with a wooly hat on for the first time in my life last night.
Arrived home from howies to a cold cottage so we are staying put in our BFJ’s and hats for the time being.
‘The Lion of Central Asia’ by Francesca Cao is a body of work about the impact of the oil industry on certain parts of Central Asia. This work in particular interests me because of the contrast in wealth. Pictured above is Mrs Sampe who lives alone in a village because years ago everyone else moved to the ‘big city’.
Anyway I really enjoy your photography, it is very refreshing in how you seem to find a way to capture these incredible moments in such simple and ordinary subject matter. It’s inspiring work for beginners like myself.
The Fujifilm Distinctions awards are up.
Congratulations to Andrew Urwin and Toby Coulson who were accredited with Merits.
“In Bangladesh, in the Das community of Atharobari, Iswarganj, Mymensingh, almost every man is involved in the profession of swine herding, a job given only to the men lowest in the caste system. Swineherders lead an unusual gypsy life, bringing their herd of pigs to various places to feed, constantly moving and living in tents of bamboo and plastic paper. They usually stay three to four days in each place, and may be away from their village and family from a day to a week at a time.”

The Do Lectures have made this RAD flip book to showcase what they’re about.
It’s stuffed full of beautiful photos from the likes of Jonathan Cherry & James Bowden.
They just shoved a digital version online. Badass.
Here is a sneaky preview of the B Side of the 7” that I will be putting out very soon….
Enjoy…x
Richard Heeps‘ new project ‘The New Lantern’
I usually love it when my friends recommend something to me.
So to all of you who consider me a friend; here are some recommendations:
1) Palm Labs - A Birmingham based photographic developers / printers (you can post stuff to them and they will post it back finished).
2) AG Photographic - A Birmingham based (Kings Heath to be exact) film/paper/chemical supplier.
3) The Framers - Located in the Custard Factory The Framers are cheap and helpful when it comes to framing things.
“The 50 photographers mentioned either side are taking part in the project and each of them will be representing one of the 50 counties in England. Their brief is to represent their own style of photography as well as their nominated county. Some live in the county they represent and some are discovering or rediscovering it for the first time.”
- I am one of these photographers. Alongside the likes of Zed Nelson and Chris Floyd. See my contribution so far here.
Rob Hornstra is one of the greatest innovators as a photographer in the documentary field. He is the first photographer in the Netherlands who found a new way of financing his projects: crowd funding.
